Living Through The Cross

"Are Ye Able?"

March 14, 2008

Please read: Mark 10:32-45
They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed and those who followed were fearful.   And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him, saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.   They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.” Mark 10:32-34 (NASB)

When I was much younger I remember a song we sang at Easter called “Are Ye Able?”   I’m not sure I remember all the words correctly but I do know that these scriptures tell the story of that song.   Jesus knew what was about to happen and the disciples listened to His words and probably thought that they understood what He was talking about.   They probably thought that until the moment they saw Him arrested in the Garden only a few days later.   In that frightening and sudden event, they figured out they really didn’t understand.   At that moment they knew the rest of their lives would not be long enough to know all that He had for them to share.

When I read of His patience with them, His example of serving and gentle correction when they ask for things (like being at His right and left hand) I am comforted and reassured that He also is patient with me.   He gently corrects my misperceptions and continues to remold, remake and teach me.   I figured out quite a while ago this will be an ongoing process all of my life both here on earth and in eternity.

Prayer: “Lord, (we think) we are able, our spirits are thine; remold us, make us, like thee divine. Thy shining radiance, above us shall be a beacon for us to life and loyalty.”   Lord God, correct us when we ask for things that make no sense.   Amen
