Living Through The Cross

"Embrace the Spirit in You"

March 9, 2008 -- Fifth Sunday in Lent

Please read: Romans 8:6-11
. . .simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.   Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life.   Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them living and breathing... Romans 8:7-9 (The Message/Remix)

Do you ever find yourself wondering if this Spirit of God is working in you?   We are curious to know, but sometimes reluctant to listen for answers.   Often we are uncertain if it’s us or the Spirit of God that is directing our lives, especially when we’re in a crisis.   A different perspective helps.   First, we consider this idea, that we are not just human beings on a spiritual path, but that we are spiritual beings on a human path, a pathway that is filled with discovery and trust.

During those silent times of wonder, when there is no response, we ask ourselves the innermost questions about our lives.   And, as our thoughts unfold we may find a thought, or formerly hidden question, that is clarified.   This self-awareness leads to revealing actions filled with commitment.

While on this quest, if we fear rejection, we will find acceptance; if we fear exclusion, we will find inclusion, and if we fear negative feelings, we will find only love, for we are discovering the theology of Christ’s oneness.

Trusting God’s action is more than making a verbal oath, more than an absence of uncertainty.   Trusting God’s action asks for a demonstration of faith of great magnitude – one of turning over control of one’s life to God.

Prayer: Gracious God, help us awaken to your ever-transcending spirit in our lives as we pledge unwavering commitment to action.   Amen
