Living Through The Cross

"Fearful or Waiting?"

March 7, 2008

Please read: John 7:1-30
(Notice these themes as you read: secrecy, hiding, and waiting. Feel free to underline them in your Bible.)
Therefore Jesus told them, "The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right.” John 7: 6 (NIV)

Was Jesus afraid?   After all he hid, he didn’t go because he knew they were waiting to kill him, and when he did go, he went in secret.   It may sound like fear to some, but in John 7:6, Jesus makes it clear-it wasn’t the right time.   Why?   He was waiting for the right celebration - Passover. The Passover embodies for Israel the pinnacle of atonement celebrations.   The night they were set free from the bondage of slavery because of the outcry from the Egyptians, the night that God passed over the Israelites because of the blood of the lamb, the night that brought salvation to God’s people.   We remember in Jesus these same things. Jesus’ sacrifice sets us free from our bondage to sin.   Jesus’ blood is our atonement for sin, and through Jesus, God brings salvation to everyone.   Jesus knew the meaning behind his waiting.   His sacrifice, death, and resurrection are echoed in the celebration of the Passover.

Why do you wait to do what God is calling you to do?   Is it fear?   Or are you waiting for the right time?   Examine your reasons carefully and honestly.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for the Jesus’ sacrifice for us.   Help us to listen, not fear, and know the right time to follow your leading.   Amen
