Living Through The Cross

"The Most Important Commandment"

February 29, 2008

Please read: Mark 12: 28-34
“Which is most important of all the commandments?”   Jesus said, “The first in importance is, ‘Listen Israel: The Lord your God is one; so love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.’   And here is the second: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.” “There is no other commandment that ranks with these.” Mark 12:28b-31 (The Message)

When something happens to my home, I fix it or get help getting it done.   I do it without much thought.   I tend to it because I love and care for my family.   What about my neighbors?   Do I really love them as I love myself?   We must look outside ourselves (the church) if we would strive to follow this teaching.   What is my response when my neighbor’s world is turned upside down by flood, ice storm, tornado, or hurricane?

Jesus showed what we should do when he removed his robe, wrapped a towel around himself and began to serve. What should my response be, write a check?   Yes and more!   It is not only youth who go on mission trips; people of many congregations are going on adult mission trips.   We have been to Texas, Louisiana and Kansas after hurricanes and tornadoes.   We went to be part of God’s presence in rebuilding and recovery.

Our neighbors are in Oklahoma too.   There are cooperative efforts to help with local needs every year where many congregations of various denominations choose projects to work as God’s servants in the community.

Prayer: Lord, we pray that these mission efforts will grow as we step outside our church doors and continue to be Christ’s love in action serving as his hands and feet to those in need.   Amen
