Living Through The Cross
"What to Give Up for Lent"February 22, 2008
|
Please read: Genesis 37:3-4, 12-28Usually when we give up something for Lent it is something we feel is a sacrifice or that we will be uncomfortable without. Last year I gave up gossip, sort of. After all it was only 40 days. Who knew I would miss it so much, I am ashamed to acknowledge. I made some great discoveries.
In Gen. 37: 3-4, we find Joseph’s Father, favoring Joseph over his brothers. His brothers became jealous and conspired against him. They plotted to destroy Joseph. They discussed him, fed each others fears of being inadequate and rejected and of not having approval from their same father.
Imagine Joseph’s emotional condition, realizing how much hatred his brother’s held for him. Imagine also the consequences of the brother’s actions having to live with what they had done. Imagine the pain we can inflict out of fear and behavior.
Jealousy and gossip have often been compared to murder. We may experience the same emotions as Joseph’s brothers and set out consciously or unconsciously to destroy another individual. Joseph’s story ended well, what about ours.
I am giving up gossip again this year. I pray it will be replaced by the habit of being kind, forgiving and most of all, loving toward all.
Prayer: God, help us remember that every person we meet is our neighbor to be loved the same way we love you. Lead us to the truth, Father, that we are complete in You. Take residence in our hearts and guide our lives according to your will, Most Excellent. Amen
